About the Organists

James Flores is based in Albury, NSW, Australia. His musical journey began with piano lessons at the age of 4, but the organ became his main focus in 2011.

James passed his LTCL examination with Distinction from London&rsquo;s Trinity College, gained his Licentiate Diploma with Honours in organ from the St Cecilia School of Music in NSW, received an archbishop&rsquo;s award for Church Music (Guild of Church Musicians) and in 2020 won a Governor-General of Australia medal for his contribution to music.

He has performed at many Australian churches and has given recitals in Lithuania and the United States of America.

His aim is to enrich lives through the power of organ music with live concerts and via a comprehensive library on Youtube.

Soomin Kim is an organist and pianist based in Auckland. She performs regularly at All Saints Anglican Church Ponsonby and Pitt St Methodist Church, and has been collaborating with Auckland Philharmonia on both instruments.

Born in Korea, Soomin began learning piano at the age of six. After moving to NZ in 2013, she studied Classical Performance at the University of Auckland. There, she was introduced to the organ! A winner of many prizes, Soomin is an accompanist for a number of Auckland choirs including The Graduate Choir NZ.

Conductor

Terence Maskell is the Artistic Director and Conductor of The Graduate Choir New Zealand. He gained his early choral and musical development from Emeritus Professor Peter Godfrey and Anthony Jennings.

He has a distinguished career as choral director and music teacher at several Auckland schools &ndash; his choirs regularly winning the highest accolades for choral excellence.

Maskell established The Graduate Choir New Zealand in 2001. It is one of the pre-eminent mixed-voice choirs in New Zealand, earning high acclaim both here and abroad for its unique warmth of sound and breadth of repertoire. The singers represent Auckland&#39;s wide cultural and ethnic mix.&nbsp;

Distinguished alumni include international opera stars Pene and Amitai Pati who began singing with the choir as teenagers.

Solo Organ and Choir - 4 May 2025

In this year&rsquo;s second free organ concert, Sooyoung Choi is set to wow the audience with&nbsp;a truly international programme, with music from&nbsp;France, Hungary, England, Germany and Sweden.

You&rsquo;ll hear Dubois&rsquo;&nbsp;Grand Choeur, the&nbsp;Adagio&nbsp;from Saint Sa&euml;ns Organ Symphonie, the Bach&nbsp;Chaconne, and a&nbsp;Scherzo&nbsp;by Antalffy. Then comes Ket&egrave;lbey&rsquo;s&nbsp;In a Persian Market, the&nbsp;Elegiac Romance&nbsp;by Ireland,&nbsp;La Nativit&egrave;&nbsp;by Langlais and&nbsp;Sonata in G minor&nbsp;by Lindberg.

Sooyoung Choi is the winner of many competitions&nbsp;and has given concerts in South Korea and several European centers. He has attended masterclasses with a number the world&rsquo;s leading organists.

Sooyoung Choi (South Korea) - 13 Jul 2025

In this year&rsquo;s third free organ concert, we welcome back&nbsp;international concert organist&nbsp;Christopher Wrench.

This time round he will perform&nbsp;works from the organ repertoire&nbsp;including what is often claimed to be a&nbsp;pinnacle of the romantic repertoire&nbsp;&ndash; Julius Reubke&rsquo;s Sonata on the 94th Psalm.  Over the course of twenty-five minutes, it takes us on a profound journey. The work begins quietly with a theme that underpins it and the question, &rsquo;how long will the ungodly triumph?&rsquo;. It ends on a furious fugue depicting God&rsquo;s judgement and victory over evil. The work clearly reflects the influence of Reubke&rsquo;s teacher, Franz Liszt and is an astonishing work for a 23-year-old composer who died just a year later.&nbsp;

Christopher Wrench is a graduate of Queensland and Vienna conservatories. He has&nbsp;regularly performed on the top organs round the world&nbsp;and is a frequent guest at festivals throughout Australia. Christopher is the winner of first prizes in competitions in Denmark, Australia and the UK. &nbsp;

Christopher Wrench (Brisbane) - 14 Sep 2025

Long-time Auckland resident,&nbsp;Dr. Indra Hughes, now based in Hobart Tasmania, returns to New Zealand to perform in the fourth and final concert of our&nbsp;Free Organ Concert Series.

His programme has the emphasis on&nbsp;English music alongside compositions from Australia, Germany and Nigeria. A highlight for many will be&nbsp;music from Hans Zimmer&rsquo;s&nbsp;Interstellar&nbsp;soundtrack.

Indra, an organist, conductor, choir trainer, harpsichordist, and broadcaster, received his early musical training at Blackburn Cathedral, Lancashire and at Oriel College, Oxford where he was Organ Scholar. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists and holds the GH Knight Memorial Prize for the RCO Choir Training examinations and a DMA from the University of Auckland.

He came to New Zealand in 1995 to take up the position of Organist and Director of Music at Auckland&rsquo;s Holy Trinity Cathedral. He founded Musica Sacra, which became one of NZ&rsquo;s most successful choirs, and was its conductor for 15 years.&nbsp;
